Member for Manly, James Griffin MP has announced that following sustained advocacy and pressure, the NSW Government has today released the long overdue Northern Beaches Internal Road Network Review.
The review, which Mr Griffin and the NSW Opposition successfully lobbied for following the cancellation of the Beaches Link Tunnel in September 2023, was commissioned to assess alternative solutions to reduce congestion and travel times on key Northern Beaches roads.
“My focus will be working constructively with my Northern Beaches colleagues to see this delivered – because a review is one thing; funding is another. What matters now is project specifics, funding, timelines and delivery, and I will be holding the Government to account every step of the way.”
Over the past two years, Mr Griffin has repeatedly pressed the Government to release its findings, lodging Questions on Notice, delivering Private Members’ Statements and writing directly to the Transport Minister to request that the review be expedited.
In September last year, Mr Griffin introduced a Notice of Motion in the NSW Parliament calling for the review to be released as a matter of urgency, noting that the Government’s plans to increase housing on the Northern Beaches must be accompanied by investment in local roads and transport infrastructure to support future population growth.
The release of the review today confirms that key choke points along the Spit Bridge and Military Road corridor, as well as access to public transport, remain major challenges requiring urgent attention. Opportunities include improving bus reliability, upgrading busy intersections, improving traffic flow on key corridors, addressing rat-running through local streets and targeting safety hot spots.
As the next step, Transport for NSW has advised that it has now commenced widespread community consultation, with the Government seeking feedback from residents on potential solutions to improve roads and traffic across the Northern Beaches.
Mr Griffin said that today’s announcement signifies not only a hard-fought win for the community, but an important first step towards progressing long overdue transport infrastructure planning and upgrades on the Northern Beaches.
Mr Griffin said his focus would now turn to working alongside all Northern Beaches MPs to ensure that residents were heard, and that key projects were not only identified but allocated the required funding in full and without delay.
“The Minns Labor Government has made no secret that they’ve spent the proposed Beaches Link Tunnel funding on transport projects in Western Sydney. It’s time for them to respect the calls of all Northern Beaches MP’s and deliver some funding for Northern Beaches transport projects.” Mr Griffin said.
“All Northern Beaches MPs have consistently warned the Government that increasing housing density without the necessary investment in transport infrastructure would be reckless.”
“The Government has now committed to undertake comprehensive consultation that will inform this plan to reduce congestion and improve public transport across the Northern Beaches.”
