Member for Manly, James Griffin MP has welcomed a package of immediate safety measures on Condamine Street, Balgowlah at the Balgowlah Village (formerly Stockland) car park exit following sustained advocacy on behalf of local residents.
Mr Griffin said he had raised the issue directly with the Minister for Roads and the Northern Beaches Council after multiple residents from Condamine Street contacted his office expressing serious concerns about ongoing safety risks at the site. In the last four years, at least three separate collisions have been recorded, with out-of-control vehicles exiting the car park at speed before crashing into residential properties situated directly opposite the egress.
“This location has become a recurring safety issue, and residents are understandably concerned,” Mr Griffin said.
“I’m pleased that both Council and Transport for NSW (TfNSW), have taken these concerns seriously and have committed to delivering short-term improvements.”
Following representations to both Council and Transport for NSW, urgent works have now been divided between the two agencies based on operational responsibility.
TfNSW has requested its maintenance contractor replace the line marking and introduce a protected pedestrian phase at the traffic signals, meaning vehicles will no longer be able to turn during the walk phase. This change aims to significantly improve pedestrian safety.
Similarly, Council has advised it is exploring options to install safety bollards, where suitable, over the next two weeks to help protect pedestrians and nearby properties from errant vehicles. Due to the number of driveways, full separation of vehicles from the footpath is not possible, but the works will provide meaningful additional protection.
Mr Griffin thanked local residents, the Council and TfNSW for responding promptly to community concerns.
“I thank the residents of Condamine Street who have contacted me to advocate for these much-needed improvements, and I welcome both Transport for NSW and the Council’s willingness to act. There is more to be done, and I will continue working closely with both agencies as well as local residents to ensure any remaining issues are properly addressed.”
