Demolition of Aquarium

I am pleased to have delivered the demolition of the former Manly Sea Life building, which was closed to the public in 2018 and declared unfit for reuse. This project marks the start of a broader plan to revitalise Manly Cove West.

When I made the commitment to get this demolition underway, my goal was to create public open space and breathe new life into Manly Cove West. Based on feedback I received from the community, I was confident this would be a terrific improvement for our community.

In addition to the fact that the building was dilapidated and no longer fit for purpose, concerns were also raised with me regarding anti-social behaviour and safety as the former tourist site increasingly became the target of vandals and trespassers.

Now, with the temporary establishment of the ‘Espy’ and further plans to convert the remaining section of the promenade into public open space, the demolition has paved the way for a new spot where both locals and visitors can enjoy the best harbour in the world. I will continue to work closely with Transport for NSW to develop a site that complements the natural environment while enhancing surrounding local attractions.

As someone deeply committed to delivering for our community, I was proud to have followed through on this important project. While it was disappointing that the boardwalk extensions ultimately weren’t feasible, it is my hope that over time this revitalised space will become a cherished part of Manly’s identity. I continue to engage with Council and other key stakeholders to ensure this urban renewal project evolves into something we can all be proud of.
