Petition: Tobacco Stores - Enough is Enough

In recent years, our community has witnessed a dramatic surge in Tobacco stores. One by one, these stores are appearing at our local shops, on our beachfronts, and near our schools. It was recently reported that for every McDonald’s restaurant, there are 60 tobacco stores in Sydney. NSW Health data shows that over the last four years, the number of tobacconists has risen by 25%.

Enough is enough.

Federal and state governments have implemented a number of measures to combat this, including harsher penalties and a nationwide ban on the sale of e-cigarettes outside of a pharmacy setting. The problem? None of these measures seem to be working.

That is why I am calling for tighter regulations on the locations of the stores that sell these products, and specifically a limit on the amount of tobacco stores permitted within each Local Government Area.

I am also calling for a stronger, and smarter compliance and enforcement regime. The responsibility can no longer fall solely on NSW Health. The NSW Government must establish a multi-agency approach to compliance, incorporating Police, Health, and Liquor and Gaming.

If you share these concerns and support tightening the planning laws to limit the amount of tobacco stores per LGA, and strengthening enforcement, please consider signing my petition by clicking the link below:
